Use canna lilies as a background plant in mixed borders, especially the tall varieties are great for creating borders, hiding tool sheds and creating a screen from neighbors. Prepare your ground or large pot by digging in plenty of well rotted compost and or animal manure. Wait until the risk of frost has past before planting. Plant in to moist soil just below the surface around 20 to 30cm apart. Maintain the soil moisture while actively growing and remove old foliage and flowers to encourage new growth. Fertilise each spring by topdressing with well rotted animal manqué and or compost
