Freesia Growing Notes

Available each year with Spring Flowering bulbs and perennials from February till May

Freesias broken up into 3 main groups. Fragrant massing, hardy fragrant freesias more suitable for garden beds where you want masses of colour. Giant freesias, commercially bred varieties that grow taller that the massing varieties and have larger flowers with stronger stems. Double flowering freesias, are like the giant freesia but with extra rows of petals in each flower making a much more full looking flower. What ever freesia you decide to grow, you are assured of vibrant colours and great cut flowers to bring inside to enjoy.

Tips: Plant the pointy end of the Freesias facing up. Make sure freesias are planted in well drained soil.

Care

Watering: Do not over water. Only water if soil begins to dry out due to a lack of natural rainfall. Over watering can lead to stressed and diseased plants.

Feeding: Prepare beds with a slow release fertiliser then top dress after shoot have appeared.

Lifting & Storage: Freesias can be left in the ground but for best results lift bulbs each couple of year to split off the newly formed bulbs and spread out.

Pest Control: Spray for insects and apply snail bait when buds appear.

Measurements

Growing Height: Massing Freesias grow 20 to 25cm, Giant Freesia grow 30 to 60cm, Double freesia grow 30 to 40cm. Protecting Freesia as they grow will encourage taller stems.

Planting Depth: Plant Freesias pointy end up at a depth of 5cm.

Plant Spacing: Space bulbs 5 to 7cm apart.

Position & Properties

Garden Position: Freesias enjoy a full sun position in the garden.

Cut Flower: Excellent cut flower.

Potting: Freesias are suitable for potting.

Timing

Planting Time: Plant Freesias from February till June.

Flowering Time: Freesias flower in Spring from July to October
